About the condition

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens, which is located towards the front of the eye. This leads to a drop in vision. Sensitivity to head lights, when driving is another common symptom of early cataracts. Cataracts can be successfully treated with cataract surgery.

Cataract surgery is one of the commonest operations performed in the UK. It is a very successful operation. Underlying focussing errors such as short sightedness and longsightedness can be treated at the time of cataract surgery. This reduces and depending on choice of intraocular lens, can eliminate the need for glasses, following cataract surgery.

Causes of cataracts

There are many causes of cataracts but by far the most common reason is ageing.
