Eye lid surgery (blepharoplasty)

About the condition | Our consultants | FAQs

As you become older the skin around your eyes may become looser as the muscles around the eye change. Extra folds of skin may appear both on the lids and under the eye. This can be treated by a cosmetic procedure which will aim to give you a more youthful appearance. The same procedure can be used for correcting any defects, deformities, and disfigurations of the eyelids.

This procedure is carried out by our ophthalmic consultan, Mr Murray who specialises in cosmetic eye surgery and undertook his training in oculoplastic surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. He will talk you through the surgery and the results you can expect. If you would like to know more, we hold regular free mini consultations with Mr Murray. Visit our events page to find our next event.

The procedure

Your consultant surgeon will make a small incision in the natural folds of the eyelid and remove excess skin and tissue before closing the wound with very fine stitching to minimise scarring.

The procedure is usually performed under a local anesthetic but a general anesthetic is also an option. You can expect to stay in hospital for one night and we suggest you take a week off work and avoid sport and strenuous activity for six weeks.

Will I need a referral from my GP or Optician?
